The review article describes the “state of the art” of Terahertz research and is published in two parts. Part 1 deals with the currently available terahertz sources and Part 2 with novel quantum materials that are currently being investigated with regard to their suitability in new, sensitive quantum detectors for space travel and Earth observation. OS researches with partners: Tracking Isotopes in the Upper Atmosphere

In a new experiment, Helmut Wiesemeyer and colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, the I. Institute of Physics at the University of Cologne and the DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems in Berlin have measured for the first time the 18O fraction in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere. They used the GREAT receiver on board the SOFIA flying observatory and were able to observe that the 18O fraction in the upper atmosphere is very similar to that in the lower atmosphere.

OS supports the rescue teams in the earthquake-affected areas of Turkey. On 7 February 2023, two scientists from the DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems arrived in the field of operation together with volunteers from I. S. A. R. Germany. DLR is providing a new type of camera (Modular Aerial Camera System, MACS) for on-site situational awareness and supplies much-needed aerial imagery.

OS in space: NASA rover Perseverance eavesdropping in thin Mars atmosphere

Mars has a very thin atmosphere, the density of which at the surface is only about one percent of that of the Earth. OS in Space: Technology for the “Eye” of the EnMAP Satellite

The DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems in Berlin has developed one of the two “eyes” or one of the so-called “focal layers” of EnMAP on behalf of OHB-System AG. “The focal level developed by the Institute for EnMAP is one of a long series of successful projects,” says Institute Director Prof. Heinz-Wilhelm Hübers. OS in space: BepiColombo space probe “falls” further towards Mercury

Coming from the day side, past Venus, slowing down with the planet's gravity and on the night side continue on course for its destination Mercury: On Thursday, 15 October 2020, ESA's BepiColombo spacecraft will fly past Venus at a distance of about 10,720 kilometres (CET) and transfer some of its kinetic energy to our neighbouring planet in order to lose its own speed. Two years after launch, the purpose of the maneuver is to further lower the point closest to the Sun in the orbit of BepiColombo towards the orbit of the planet Mercury.

OS wins: Innovation Prize Berlin Brandenburg goes to IPS

On 30 November 2018, the DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems was awarded the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award 2018 for its Integrated Positioning System (IPS). The European-Japanese BepiColombo mission is scheduled to launch into space aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana on 20 October 2018 at 3. 45 CET (19 October 22. 45 local time). OS in Space: Hyperspectral Earth Observation Instrument DESIS Launches to the International Space Station in 2018

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the US company Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) announce the completion of the development and production process of the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS). OS in space: Satellite twins "Grace Follow-On" are launched

The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment-Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission started on May 22, 2018, 21:47. The aim of the mission is to create high-resolution models of the Earth's gravity field in order to study the evolution of the climate. As an additional payload, GRACE-FO uses a Laser Ranging Interferometer (LRI) as a technology demonstration. The LRI was developed and built in collaboration with SpaceTech GmbH, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), DLR-OS and DLR Space Systems. Am 9. September 2016 um 13.00 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Sommerzeit hat der DLR Institut für Optische Sensorsysteme entwickelte und gebaute Feuerdetektionssatellit BIROS den Picosatelliten BEESAT-4 in 515 Kilometern über der norwegischen Inselgruppe Spitzbergen im All ausgesetzt.
