The focus of the Institute is on the development of optical sensors for space applications, in particular for Earth observation, planetary research and civil security. With this expertise the Institute contributes to the research goals of DLR and to solutions for the grand societal challenges. Climate change and security are two of these challenges and both are important fields of application of the Institute’s instruments. The Institute provides its expertise as a consultant for public institutions and it is a reliable partner for industry. It develops and provides technological solutions in areas where industry is lacking the knowhow or identifies too high risks.
