Civil Security

With its expertise, the Institute contributes to DLR's research objectives and to solutions for the major challenges facing society. Climate change and civil security are two of these challenges and both are important fields of application for the Institute's instruments.

CO2Image

The CO2Image project is a satellite mission with the task of detecting and quantifying CO2 sources worldwide up to a limit of 1MtCO2/year. This mission is a natural extension of other missions to study greenhouse gases such as CO2M.

DESIS

DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) is a hyperspectral instrument developed by the Institute of Optical Sensor Systems for the MUSES platform of the US company Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) on board the International Space Station (ISS).

FIREBIRD

FireBIRD is an Earth observation mission and consists of the two satellites TET-1 and BIROS (Bispectral Infrared Optical System), each of which carries a camera system developed at DLR for the visible and infrared spectral range as its main payload. Both are based on the small satellite BIRD, which was also developed and built by the DLR Institute of Optical Sensor Systems.

IPS

IPS the "Integrated Positioning System" was developed here at the Institute for Optical Sensor Systems and is able to accurately determine its own movement without additional assumptions about the environment and without external referencing.

Live-Lage

The Live-Lage research project is developing new technologies for rapid visual reconnaissance of major emergencies. Various optical technologies are combined with the possibilities of new unmanned aerial systems.

MACS HAP

MACS-HAP is an aerial camera system for remote sensing specifically for high-altitude platforms (HAPs). The instrument is being developed as a payload for the HAP alpha stratospheric aircraft.

OPTSAL Innovation Lab

The Optical Technologies for Situational Awareness Lab (OPTSAL) is a Helmholtz Innovation Lab at the DLR Institute of Optical Sensor Systems. The focus is on advancing the research and development of optical technologies for situational awareness in disaster and large-scale emergencies as well as technology transfer.
