QuNET Flight Experiment - Key Experiment 3 (Trailer )

In Key Experiment 3 of the QuNET initiative, we are taking to the skies! The preparations are complete – acceptance, tests, certifications, installation in the aircraft... In the next step, the optical link will be tested in a flight campaign. An optical communication terminal, which has been specified for QKD experiments, is mounted on the underside of a Dornier 228 from the DLR research fleet.

Launch of QUBE

Shortly before the launch of the QUBE satellite on board a SpaceX rocket, scientists from the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation report on their work in the project. In particular, the miniaturised laser terminal on board the satellite was developed at the institute for use in quantum communication.

Optical Ground Station Oberpfaffenhofen OGSOP (engl.)

In the future, laser communication will be an indispensable tool for fast and secure data links to and via satellites and aircraft. Laser links enable enormous data rates, quantum encryption as well as more precise future satellite navigation systems.

OSIRIS4CubeSat - das kleinste Laserterminal der Welt

Der Kleinstsatellit PIXL-1 kann mit einer hochauflösenden Kamera Bilder der Erde aufnehmen und diese mit dem hochkompakten Kommunikationsterminal CubeLCT (OSIRIS4CubeSat) über eine Laserverbindung zum Boden senden.

Kleines System mit großer Aufgabe

DLR und Tesat bringen die Laserkommunikation mit einem Cubesat-Satelliten ins Weltall Was kommt nach der Glasfaser? Laserkommunikation! Sie gilt als kabellose Zukunft der Datenübertragung im All. Als Pionier der Kleinstsatelliten soll PIXL-1 zusammen mit OSIRIS4CubeSat, dem kleinsten Laserterminal der Welt, unter Beweis stellen, dass Laserkommunikation aus dem Weltall funktioniert – sogar im Kleinformat.

Messkampagne - Simulation optischer Kommunikation zwischen Satellit und Bodenstation

Das Video entstand bei einer End-to-End-Messkampagne für das Laserkommunikationsterminal OSIRIS4CubeSat. Zum Test des Systems wurde ein "Flat Sat" aufgebaut - im Prinzip ein fertiger Satellit, nur ohne Solarpanel und Steuerung, aber ansonsten mit den exakt gleichen Bauteilen wie der Kleinsatellit PIXL (Start am 24. Januar 2021).

QUBE - Quantum experiments on CubeSat

Shortly before the launch of the QUBE satellite on board a SpaceX rocket, scientists from the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation report on their work on the project. In particular, the miniaturised laser terminal on board the satellite was developed for use in quantum communication. The Institute's optical ground station will receive the light signals from the satellite as a receiving station and forward them for processing.

Laser communication from Tornado aircraft

Demonstration of laser communication between Tornado jetfighter and Transportable Optical Ground Station: A laser communication terminal was installed in a Tornado jet fighter to test optical high rate data downlinks at high speed. It directed the laser beam towards the GPS position of the optical ground station.

Video: Quantum key transmission from the air to the ground (engl.)

In 2011 a successful experiment by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) in cooperation with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich has opened up new possibilities in cryptography. For the first time, researchers have managed to transmit a quantum key from a fast-moving object. The quantum data was sent from an aircraft to a ground station via a laser beam.

New concepts for communication, navigation and surveillance in air traffic: Today's civil aviation is a rapidly growing market. This results in an increasing density of air traffic, which still mainly relies on analog communication and GNSS for navigation purposes. To enable future air traffic management, DLR is developing new concepts for communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS). The integration of CNS services is an important goal in order to improve the efficiency of frequency utilization and increase reliability. The aim is to achieve optimum separation between aircraft while maintaining safety at the current level or even higher.

LDACS stands for L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System. It is the upcoming standard for digital, terrestrial aeronautical radio and thus an important data link technology within the future communications infrastructure for aviation.

Das Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) ist ein Landesystem für Flugzeuge, welches auf Satellitennavigation basiert. Es ist an ersten Flughäfen (z.B. in Frankfurt, Zürich, Sydney und Newark) bereits heute im Einsatz und ermöglicht dort Präzisionsanflüge unter CAT-I Wetterbedingungen.

The Railway Collision Avoidance System (RCAS) by DLR (engl.)

DLR's Railway Collision Avoidance System (RCAS) is a 'safety overlay' system which can be deployed on top of any existing safety infrastructure in train networks. The core idea of RCAS is to broadcast the position and intended track of trains as well as additional data like vehicle dimensions to all other trains in the area using ad-hoc train-to-train communications.

SciPPPer - automated inland navigation

Locking is one of the most frequent but also most critical maneuvers in inland navigation. The main aim of automating this process is to increase the ease and safety of shipping traffic. The technological basis for the new assistance system is the provision of reliable and highly accurate information on the position, attitude and speed of the inland waterway vessel by evaluating signals from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) using the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method.

R-Mode Baltic - Safe Navigation in the Baltic Sea (engl.)

The video explains how the R-Mode Baltic project is helping to increase maritime safety in the Baltic Sea. The project launches the development of a technical system that allows for safe ship navigation when the established Global Navigation Satellite Systems fail due to intentional or unintentional interference.

Sicherheit in der Schifffahrt - das Empfangssystem AIS-Plus

Neues Empfangssystem des DLR erhöht Sicherheit in der Schifffahrt auch bei dichtem Verkehr Das DLR entwickelte zusammen mit dem Industriepartner Weatherdock AG das Schiffs-Informationssystem AIS-Plus. Mit dieser verbesserten Variante des herkömmlichen AIS- Empfängers (Automatic Identification System) werden auch bei hohem Verkehrsaufkommen und schlechten Übertragungsbedingungen zuverlässig Positionsmeldungen empfangen.

On 25 June 2024, the AHEAD project team demonstrated two use cases with the semi-autonomous remote-controlled SHERP vehicle: a humanitarian aid delivery for people in hard-to-reach regions of the world and a rescue mission in a flood situation.
