Video: Roll2Rail - Worldwide first Train-to-Train Channel Sounding Measurement Campaign (engl.)
In April 2016 the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation conducted the worldwide first channel sounding measurement campaign with two high speed trains. The campaign was performed within the Shift2Rail lighthouse project Roll2Rail together with Trenitalia on the high speed railways between Naples and Rome.
The two trains were equipped with the DLR Channel Sounder, ITS communication equipment, the Railway Collision Avoidance System (RCAS), multiple antennas, and several localization and movement tracking systems. In total a team of 16 researchers collected in four nights an extensive dataset and tested communication systems under high speed railway conditions. The knowledge gained from this measurement campaign will enable the direct communication between trains (Train-to-Train communication). This Train-to-Train communication is essential for novel operational concepts for train control and operation. In this way, we contribute to the transformation of railways to a more efficient, safer and greenhouse gas reduced means of transportation.
