The Satellite Networks department is the home of DLR research & development work in the area of satellite communications. We play since many years a leading role worldwide in the conception and investigation of novel system concepts, transmission techniques, protocols & algorithms for satellite communications.

The coming back of satellite constellation and the inclusion of Non-Terrestrial networks (NTN) as integral part of 5G and 6G mobile wireless networks have recently paved the way for a new exciting era in the field of satellite communications.

We perform cutting edge research in the all the aforementioned areas and scenarios, spanning from the initial conception of new ideas to activity with higher technological maturity ultimately aiming at technology transfer to our industrial partners.

We are also actively contributing to relevant standardization bodies (ETSI, 3GPP, CCSDS, DVB) and to 6G-IA activities.

Last not least, we are organizing since 2006 the Advanced Satellite Multimedia System Conference in cooperation with our partners.
