Project DODfast (Demonstration of Optical Data link fast): Demonstration of laser communication between Tornado jetfighter and Transportable Optical Ground Station
A laser communication terminal was installed in a Tornado jet fighter to test optical high rate data downlinks at high speed. It directed the laser beam towards the GPS position of the optical ground station. Different flight tracks and speeds were tested.
The experiment goals were achieved - laser communication at an aircraft velocity up to 850 km/h!
Laser communication can provide data rates up to Terabits per second.
