The test area

Acquisition technology

The aim is to detect vehicles and other objects in the traffic area using sensor systems. The continuous detection of all road users along a fixed section of the motorway provides a basis for holistic evaluation (in the sense of ground truth) and for the development of new assistance and automation systems. This is a focal point of the Test Bed Lower Saxony, which is being implemented in particular on selected sections of the A 39 motorway.

Communication technology

In addition to the standard technologies currently available on the market, Vehicle2X communication technology will be installed on sections of the A 39 motorway. In these sections, ITS-G5-supported co-operative vehicle functions that communicate with the infrastructure and background services can then be comprehensively tested and used.

High-precision maps

Highly accurate maps are important for various aspects of testing automated and connected vehicles. For example, they form the basis for creating realistic virtual traffic environments that enable simulation-based testing. They can also be used as a reference for test and trial vehicles in the test bed.

Scenarios and models

The provision of relevant scenarios and selected models or simulations (e.g. driving and traffic simulations) enables the simulation-based testing of vehicles or vehicle components. In particular, this supports efficient testing in almost all test bench environments.

Dynamic traffic data information

Among other things, this makes the current signalling or the currently displayed traffic infrastructure information accessible to vehicles in the test bed (e.g. current displays of variable message signs). Additional information on the traffic situation in the test area (e.g. hard shoulder clearances and information on roadworks) can also be transmitted to the vehicle in this way.

Mobile superstructures

In addition to the stationary communication and recording technology set-ups, mobile set-ups can also be used for campaign-specific use in non-stationary sections of the test bed and special areas such as test sites, car parks and commercial areas. This provides great flexibility as you are not tied to fixed locations.

Test bed cadastre

Status-related information on the test bed is maintained in the register (e.g. on the quality of lane markings or weather information), which can be used for the efficient planning, preparation and evaluation of test campaigns.

Backend and data management systems

The Test Bed Lower Saxony offers an IT background system for data management and centralised information processing and provision. In addition to aggregated data storage, the background system, as the central interface for all test bed services, also enables the integration of other external services and information sources for the testing and evaluation of innovative mobility services.
