The visualisation of traffic areas enables simulations of tests for automated driving that are as close to reality as possible or investigations into traffic control and road safety. A lot of data from various sources flows into such virtual worlds and is largely processed automatically.

The department designs, develops and evaluates architectural principles and platform structures as well as interfaces and basic services. Theses are used for the management and processing of spatial-temporal data for the identification and prediction of traffic situations and technical system states.

Predictive maintenance - detecting and eliminating track problems at an early stage

Our mission: to increase rail safety and reliability. Our approach: lay the foundations for predictive maintenance of rail infrastructure. In this video, we at the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems explain why we are researching automatic condition monitoring during regular operation.

Traffic modelling – a basis for understanding traffic

The Institute of Transportation Systems is dedicated to the comprehensive investigation of current traffic conditions. Using cameras and sensors, traffic on motorways and in the city is recorded digitally and analysed and visualised by researchers. This enables a detailed investigation of normal and critical situations and the development of preventative solutions. The modelling also serves as the basis for simulation models, which aim to optimise traffic control.
