Test Bed Lower Saxony: Innovation laboratory for the mobility of the future

The constantly growing number of vehicles on our roads brings with it a multitude of challenges: traffic jams, accidents and environmental pollution are just some of them. Conventional transport systems are reaching their limits and there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to make mobility more efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly. The solution: the Test Bed Lower Saxony as a pioneer for automated and networked mobility.

The Test Bed Lower Saxony is a pioneering research platform for developing and testing automated and connected mobility solutions. It offers specially designated test routes and a unique infrastructure for testing new technologies and transport concepts under real-life conditions. Research focuses on automated vehicles, communication technologies and the optimisation of transport infrastructure. Testing not only drives innovation, but also provides insights for more efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly mobility. The Test Bed Lower Saxony is paving the way for a new era of mobility characterised by automation, networking and innovation.

Test area and infrastructure

The Test Bed Lower Saxony comprises specially designated test areas and a unique infrastructure that enables researchers and companies to test their innovations under real-life conditions. Thanks to the variety of test environments - from inner-city areas to motorways - different scenarios can be simulated and optimised.

Automated vehicles

A central focus of the test bed is the testing of automated vehicles. These vehicles, which are equipped with advanced sensors and control systems, should be able to navigate autonomously and ensure a safe and efficient journey. The tests on the test bed can identify and improve possible weak points in order to increase the reliability and safety of these vehicles.

The test area

The map shows the route of the Lower Saxony test area and the services available in the respective sections. The Lower Saxony test area includes sections of the A2, A7, A39 and A391 motorways as well as parts of the B3, B6, B243 and L295 federal and rural roads. It also integrates the established routes of the Intelligent Mobility Application Platform (AIM), which is in operation in Braunschweig city centre. This will enable testing in different traffic situations and in the transition between different road types. Once completed, the Lower Saxony test field will cover a total of over 280 kilometres of road with a wide range of technical equipment.

Stakeholder

Strong participation - DLR is working with nine participants to set up the Test Bed Lower Saxony. They combine expertise from the fields of transport technology, telecommunications, the automotive industry and road safety.
