MPSC – Smart Cities model projects

What opportunities does digitalisation offer for urban development? This is currently being investigated in over 70 so-called "Smart Cities model projects". These model projects are municipalities that are funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) to implement smart city measures. The knowledge gained here is intended to benefit all German municipalities, as the pilot projects share and pass on their experiences. Fields of action include mobility, urban development, sustainability and the economy.

The Smart Cities model projects are using the funding for different innovative and digitally supported measures for example to create digital twins of their cities and regions as well as urban data platforms, which can be used to precisely analyse and simulate urban developments. This enables well-founded decisions to be made and sustainable solutions to be implemented in a targeted manner. Digitalisation can make cities more liveable and sustainable. In the field of mobility, real-time data and digital platforms can support the networking of different modes of transport and contribute to the development of intelligent traffic control systems.

The DLR Institute of Transportation Systems is part of the Koordinierungs- und Transferstelle Modellprojekte Smart Cities (KTS), which supports the pilot projects during the strategy development and implementation of their measures. We support the municipalities in developing and successfully implementing customised digital solutions. By sharing best practices and providing technical expertise, we help to ensure that digitalisation in urban development succeeds and that sustainable, liveable cities are created.
