Innovation for a more sustainable future: Our work focuses on the development and virtualisation of efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft engines and power plant turbines. On this page you will find a selection of our research projects. We cooperate with various partners from academia, industry and government. We advise the German Federal Ministry of Defence on defence technology issues.

Ceramic stator blades for the turbine

The 3DCeraTurb project focuses on the design and manufacture of a turbine vane using two of the most important new classes of manufacturing technologies and materials.

In the ADAPT project, DLR is evaluating future hydrogen propulsion systems. We are not only focusing on the use of hydrogen as a fuel, but also on the development of the virtual engine.

Projekt PERseuS

Distribution of liquid fuels combustion chamber

The distribution of liquid fuels during injection into the combustion chamber has a major influence on the efficiency of combustion and the development of pollutants. The aim of this project is to carry out spray tests using a specially designed measuring section.

Flexible Fuel Injection Combustion Chamber and Turbine Technology

The focus is on the viability of dual-fuel combustion of hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuels for modern aeroengines using state-of-art test rigs with optical access under aircraft-relevant conditions.

A hybrid electric propulsion system consisting of an electric motor and a boundary layer suction thrust generator is the focus of the LuFo project.

Hydrogen in aircraft gas turbines

Multiple hydrogen injectors will be run and driven to the extreme point of being extinguished and consecutively relighted while high-speed cameras record the occurring phenomena.

Project WotAn

Interaction of hydrogen-adapted combustion chamber components

The aim is to develop a test vehicle for a hydrogen-adapted and application-oriented combustion chamber and to use it to investigate the various effects of the combustion characteristics altered by the fuel change.

Project DINA2030

New propulsion concept uses residual heat from engine exhaus

We are investigating one of the most promising ideas for reducing the climate impact of aviation: MTU Aero Engines' revolutionary Water-Enhanced Turbofan engine concept.
