At the Institute of Propulsion Technology, we combine component, numerical simulation and experimental expertise under one roof to understand the complete gas turbine. Our scientists work on the design and optimisation of new engines and components, simulate transient flows and test their research results on our high-tech test benches using the latest measurement technology developed in-house.

Combustor

The combustion department explores the complex interactions in the combustion chamber of aero engines and gas turbines. The department develops and operates a range of test facilities to better understand the many interactions between flow, chemical reaction and heat transfer.

Combustor Testing

We test gas turbine combustors for aerospace and power applications under real-world conditions on test beds that are unique in the world. These highly sophisticated trials support the development and transfer of ground-breaking gas turbine technology into industrial applications.

Fan and Compressor

More efficient compressor systems and thrust generators for modern aircraft engines are the aim of the department. Numerical design, simulation and optimisation are combined with experiments on various test beds.

Numerical Methods

The Numerical Methods department develops highly optimised CFD methods for high-fidelity simulation and analysis of turbomachinery components in aircraft engines and stationary gas turbines.

Engine

The engine department evaluates and digitises future propulsion concepts and aircraft engines and develops methods for their detailed analysis.

Engine Acoustics

Where does noise in engines and gas turbines originate and how does it propagate? How do future low-noise aircraft engines and gas turbines need to be designed, and what new technologies are needed? The Engine Acoustics Department deals with these questions.

Engine Measurement Systems

The department is concerned with the development and application of high-resolution laser-optical measurement techniques for the analysis of aerothermodynamic processes in engine and power plant components and for the validation of computational methods.

Turbine

The department researches the turbine component for aircraft engines and its stationary use in power plants. As a basis for a successful energy transition, researchers are developing attractive solutions to increase efficiency.
