As part of the OptimUM research project, the two VITAL processes were implemented in the city of Hefei in China. One of the aims of the project was to reduce emissions through intelligent traffic management. The test intersection is a complex inner-city junction. Depending on the direction of travel, it has up to 5 lanes and a high volume of traffic. Magnetic field sensors in the carriageway surfaces were used for vehicle detection.
The test runs in real traffic and the subsequent analysis showed positive effects for both the loss-time-based and the co-operative VITAL method in terms of traffic flow and emissions.
