MOVEMENT – Mobility in public transport of the future with people-friendly transport systems
The MOVEMENT project is developing and testing concepts for automated on-demand public transport to improve connections in rural areas, including emission-free vehicles, digital stops and a remote control centre.
Mobility is a central basis for individual freedom, an indicator of social prosperity and important for economic growth in Germany. Mobility is constantly changing. Today's mobility concepts will no longer be able to adequately meet the needs of the future. It is important that the social, economic and technical challenges, such as demographic change, urbanisation, the connection of rural areas, automation in transport and the rising costs of mobility, are resolved when considering future forms of mobility. The attractive mobility of the future is modern, clean, barrier-free and affordable.
For sustainable mobility, it is important that new digital mobility services for collective mobility are developed and networked in a user-friendly way. Existing flexible systems such as on-demand and community buses must be strengthened. Developments in digitalisation and automation must form the basis for the collective mobility of the day after tomorrow. The MOVEMENT project focussed on automated on-demand public transport to improve connections in rural areas. Service concepts were developed and their effects on stakeholders were determined using an operating simulation. Based on this, energy supply models for emission-free vehicles were created. Economic analyses provide information on the economic viability of the concepts.
Concepts based on augmented and mixed reality were trialled and demonstrated for seamless and convenient boarding at (virtual) stops. A toolbox for researching the needs of users and their perception of safety in highly automated forms of transport was created. A remote control centre workstation was also developed and demonstrated so that operating personnel can intervene in operations at any time if necessary. In order to enable highly automated driving functions in public transport, a digital infrastructure register was developed and implemented on the basis of AI methods.
