SpaceLiner

The SpaceLiner is an advanced, visionary concept for suborbital, hypersonic, winged passenger transportation that is currently being investigated at DLR-SART. The two-stage vehicle is propelled by a rocket engine.

CREAM

CREAM (Collet Release Mechanism Technology) is an HDRM based on shape memory alloy material and commercial standard engineering parts as the core for fixation and release.

MASCOT

MASCOT ("Mobile Asteroid Surface SCouT") is a lander that was launched on December 3, 2014 with the Hayabusa2 sample return mission (JAXA). The target of this mission is the near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu.

Wireless Compose 2

Wireless Compose-2 (WICO2) is the continuation of the successful ISS experiment Wireless Compose, a wireless communication network for the efficient readout of sensors and localization of objects within the ISS. Using the knowledge gained from the precursor, Wireless Compose-2 will develop an optimized system that is smaller, more energy-efficient and more accurate.

Post ISS

For decades the International Space Station (ISS) has demonstrated not only long-term international cooperation between 14 partner governments but also a significant engineering and programmatic achievement mostly as compromise of budget, politics, administration and technological feasibility.

Eu:CROPIS

Astronauts must be supplied with air, water and food whilst in space. In order to 'recycle' these vital resources over a long period of time and to make them available for several years, closed life support systems are needed. The DLR mission Eu:CROPIS (Euglena Combined Regenerative Organic Food Production in Space) is focussing on testing the long-term stability of a biological life support system for missions to the Moon or Mars.

GSDR - Generic Software-Defined Radio

The GSDR is a highly integrated software-defined radio (SDR) platform that allows the operation of multiple applications in a broad frequency range from 70 MHz to 6 GHz (and beyond).

Philae

The Landing and Exploration Technology department supported the landing of the comet lander "Philae" with experimental investigations and numerical multi-body simulations.

InSight - HP3

HP³'s core component is a so-called instrumented electromechanical "mole" equipped with active and passive instrumentation for heat flow measurement (TEM-A and TEM-P) and a combined accelerometer and inclinometer (STATIL), which penetrates the ground through an internal percussion mechanism.

HGF Alliance "ROBEX"

The HGF Alliance ROBEX (Robotic Exploration of Extreme Environments) is responsible for the conceptual design and technical development of robotic infrastructures on the Moon and in the deep sea. The main focus of the Alliance is the modular design and reconfigurability of the stations.

SHEFEX II: Navigation Experiment

In October 2005 the first experiment of DLR’s hypersonic SHarp Edge Flight EXperiment (SHEFEX) program was successfully launched from the Andøya Rocket Range in northern Norway.

SINPLEX

For space missions which land on other celestial bodies, modernizing and especially miniaturizing the navigation subsystem is an important objective. Saving mass by miniaturizing elements of spacecraft either allows more mass for the payload or reduces the mass of the spacecraft and thereby saves fuel and launch costs.

EAGLE

EAGLE (Environment for Autonomous GNC Landing Experiments) ist ein autonomes experimentelles EAGLE (Environment for Autonomous GNC Landing Experiments) is an experimental Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) vehicle developed by the GNC systems department as a demonstrator for GNC technologies.

ATON – Autonomous Terrain-Based Optical Navigation

Future space exploration missions envisage feats ranging from in-orbit rendezvous and docking to precise and safe landing on planetary bodies. These missions will not only take place in the vicinity of Earth and Moon but also stretch out several astronomical units to targets like Mars, asteroids, or the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

Hypersonic Vehicles

DLR-SART is actively involved in the definition and in preliminary design studies of advanced supersonic and hypersonic transport. An important goal is the critical assessment of the suitability of such vehicles and their propulsion technology as first stages in future space transportation systems.

Liquid Fly-back Booster (LFBB)

Current proposals for the introduction of reusable components in space transportation focus on winged fly-back boosters, powered by liquid rocket engines. Such vehicles were under consideration for a Space Shuttle upgrade, but are also considered for possible future evolution of Ariane 5.

Eu:CROPIS: Attitude Control System

The mission Eu:CROPIS (Euglena Combined Regenerative Organic food Production In Space) is an element of DLR’s compact satellite program. The whole satellite is specifically developed to carry a biological experiment. The satellite has a mass of about 230 kg and includes several subsystems which directly interfere with the attitude control system (deployable solar panels, liquid pumps etc.).

AISat

Globalisation leads to increased amounts of traffic on our oceans. To simultaneously increase the safety of this maritime traffic, it has been compulsory for large ships to carry an Automatic Identification System (AIS) since 2002 that monitors ships and tracks their locations and in this way acts as a collision avoidance system.

ADS-B

An A320 overflying Scotland was the first aircraft 'seen' from space by a receiver developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), proving that tracking aircraft from space is possible. The ESA PROBA-V satellite has been orbiting Earth since 7 May 2013, and is equipped with a receiver that detects aircraft ADS-B signals (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast).

S2TEP

With the S2TEP small satellite platform, DLR has an independent platform for conducting its own technology experiments under space conditions. The satellite bus is based on modular and scalable technologies developed at DLR.

MaMMoTH-Up

MaMMoTH-Up represents a permanent adaptable experiment opportunity located on the ARIANE5 (A5) Vehicle Equipment Bay. Protected by a dedicated container design it shall make extensive use of Components-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and advanced software to achieve its ambitious data collection, processing and compression tasks.

HPS – Hybrid Simulation Platform for Space Systems

For the development and verification of guidance, navigation and control systems (GNC systems), models of the system dynamics of space vehicles, the expected environmental conditions and disturbances, as well as sensor and actuator models are indispensable tools.

Gossamer-1

The Gossamer-1 project is concerned with the development and establishment of a space-qualified technology for the deployment of ultra-light, large foil structures in space. The core technologies are foil and deployment technologies that can be folded to a small, rocket-launch-compatible stowage volume with minimised mass.

AsteroidFinder: Attitude Control System

Within the Compact Satellite Programm of DLR it was studied if it is possible to adapt the payload AsteroidFinder to the Compact Satellite Bus.

Wireless Compose

Wireless Compose (wireless communication and positioning experiment) is a technical experiment currently prepared for use on ISS and designed to demonstrate the utilization of a wireless communication network for collecting sensor data and for object localization within the Columbus module.
