Space Launcher Systems Analysis Department

The design and analysis of future space launch systems are core tasks in the Space Transportation Systems Analysis department.

In addition to the multidisciplinary consideration of the vehicle, this includes the prediction and recalculation of drive systems. The possibility of an integrated consideration of vehicle and drive within one institute allows the fast and consistent iteration of space transportation systems and is unique in this form in Germany.

The range of tasks in system analysis goes beyond classic launch vehicles and includes all transporters for orbit transfer, atmospheric entry and hypersonic flight. The reusability of future space transporters is now the focus of all investigations. With over 25 years of continuous work on this research topic, we have unique expertise in reusable launch vehicles (RLV) throughout Europe.

Main topics of the department:

  • Critical analysis and evaluation of space transportation concepts, including their cost and environmental/climate impact. This allows a competent and neutral assessment of the feasibility and attractiveness of these systems.
  • Preliminary design of new, innovative carrier and upper stage concepts with a special focus on reusability and suitability in European transportation scenarios.
  • Identification of suitable new technologies to reduce costs by analyzing their impact on the overall system
  • Continuous improvement of simulation methods and the integrated, multi-disciplinary design processes with regard to both fast and sufficiently accurate calculation methods. This also includes the approach of "concurrent engineering" in the corresponding facility (CEF) of the institute.

SART develops new and innovative ideas that deliberately leave conventional thinking behind.

Examples of this are the visionary concept of the SpaceLiner or the efficient return of winged RLV stages using the patented "in-air-capturing" process, which has been further developed as part of the Horizon 2020 project FALCon under the leadership of System Analysis Space Transportation.
