State Secretary Philipp learns about hydrogen engines tests

How can gas turbines be operated reliably and safely with hydrogen today? This question was the focus of a visit by Udo Philipp, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, to the Institute of Propulsion Technology at the German Aerospace Centre in Cologne.

Together with its industrial partners, the Institute of Propulsion Technology is accelerating the development process for the combustion of hydrogen in gas turbines in various projects funded by the German government's aviation research programme (LuFo) and at European level in the EU Clean Aviation and EU Horizon programmes. In the test cell of our largest high-pressure combustion chamber test facility, we informed State Secretary Philipp about current ground experiments on hydrogen combustion in gas turbines. In the test cell of DLR's largest high-pressure combustor, we informed State Secretary Philipp about current ground experiments on hydrogen combustion in gas turbines. Dr Guido Stockhausen, from the Department of Engine Measurement Technology, presented the newly developed optical probe technology that will enable the Institute's scientists to study the dynamics of the hydrogen flame in future gas turbine applications through minimally invasive access to the combustion chamber.

Besides the Institute of Propulsion Technology, State Secretary Philipp visited the quartz laboratory of the Institute of Solar Research and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the DLR site in Cologne. He was accompanied by Klaus Hamacher, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, and Prof. Karsten Lemmer, Executive Board Member for Innovation, Transfer and Scientific Infrastructures, who gave him an overview of DLR's scientific laboratories and test facilities.
