BepiColombo/ MERTIS

The MERTIS (MErcury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer) is a scientific instrument for ESA's BepiColombo deep-space mission. BepiColombo was launched to Mercury in 2018 and will observe the planet from 2023 after more than 5 years of flight. The instrument design, developed by the DLR Institute of Optical Sensor Systems in Berlin, is based on a novel and highly integrated instrument concept with a very low mass of only 3 kg and low power consumption.

Mission BepiColombo

Am 20. Oktober 2018 ist um 3.45 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Sommerzeit (19. Oktober 22.45 Uhr Ortszeit) die europäisch-japanische Planetenmission BepiColombo an Bord einer Ariane-5-Rakete vom Weltraumbahnhof Kourou in Französisch-Guyana ins Weltall gestartet. Die Mission soll nicht nur den Planeten Merkur erforschen, sondern auch neue Erkenntnisse über unser Sonnensystem liefern.

MERTIS Design

Die Instrumentenarchitektur besteht aus zwei thermisch entkoppelten Einheiten, das Sensormodul mit Optik, den Detektoren und Auslese-Elektroniken, sowie einem Shutter ebenfalls für die On-Board Kalibration.

OS in space: MERTIS successfully activated

On November 13, the time had come - the MERTIS instrument on the Mercury probe BepiColombo was switched on in space for the first time. Our team traveled to Darmstadt to monitor the switch-on in the PISA (PI Support Area) room at ESOC, the European Space Operations Center. #The blogpost is only available in german language

OS in space: BepiColombo mission: The long voyage to Mercury

The European-Japanese planetary mission BepiColombo lifted off from the European spaceport in French Guiana at 03:45 Central European Summer time on 20 October 2018 (22:45 on 19 October local time), on board an Ariane 5 launch vehicle.
