Urbanisation in Africa

Urbanization in Africa

Rapid urbanisation in Africa is leading to a noticeable shift in the disaster risk profiles of the cities and countries on that continent. One of the main challenges in assuring resilient cities is regular collection of up-to-data risk data. For that reason the project goal is to develop the satellite-supported derivation of spatial indicators for all African cities with populations estimated at over 10,000 inhabitants. Such indicators include the extent of ground sealing, settlement density and dynamics, and population distribution. A quarterly assessment of the trend of all indicators in existing risk zones (areas of potential earthquakes, slope collapse, floods, storms and storm tides) is also to be undertaken.

The core element of the project is the linked use of earth observation, machine learning and local knowledge to increase the resilience of African cities to (geo)risks via regular mapping of settlement development.
