Geo-Risks and Civil Security Department
The aftermath of natural disasters worldwide, including Germany, have revealed the vulnerability of our society. Research and development efforts have made crucial contributions towards better preparation for such events and better protection of the people and infrastructure concerned.
The Geo-Risks and Civil Security department of the German Remote Sensing Data Center conducts research on innovative methods for assessing earth observation data in order to gain new insights and derive information. The focus is on environmental and natural disasters, humanitarian crises, geological risk research, civil security research, and societal challenges including global urbanization and migration.
Our research includes developing new methodologies for assessing remote sensing data, using and further refining geoinformation technologies, creating thematic processors and monitoring systems, modeling vulnerability and risk, and devising and establishing crisis information and early warning systems.
The work of the department is integrated in national, European and international collaborative efforts and carried out in close coordination with relevant user organizations. Together with other EOC bodies, the department also has responsibility for operating the Center for Satellite Based Crisis Information (ZKI).
We publish our findings, making them available to the science and business sectors as well as the general public. By cooperating with commercial companies as well as public authorities we contribute to the transfer of technology and information.
