ROOT

The ROOT joint project is one of four winning projects in the 2022 bidt annual call for proposals on the topic of "Environment and digital transformation". The Departments of Computer Science, Biology and Remote Sensing at the University of Würzburg are working together to develop and provide quantitative geoinformation for all forest areas in Bavaria. Near-real-time maps of overstory loss in Bavaria's forests are derived based on earth observation data (S-1, S-2, Landsat, etc.) and made available via a geoinformation portal. Remote sensing methods developed for this purpose are optimized at the Chair of Computer Science. In addition, information products on causes of damage (drought, bark beetle, windthrow, etc.) and biodiversity information are derived in order to better understand the causes and effects of overstory loss. In cooperation with biologists and the Bavarian Forest National Park, among others, training courses are also held for foresters, other stakeholders and the public.
