HPDA for EO – Successful terrabyte Evaluation

Almost 40 participants from DLR and the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) met at the end of November at LRZ in Garching for an evaluation of terraybte. terrabyte is an innovative High Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) platform jointly operated by DLR, LRZ and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

The platform offers scientists efficient access to earth observation data, a high-level processing environment, and practical tools for data assessment. It frees scientists of many tasks so that they can concentate on the analysis of earth observation data or on problem solutions.

Over the course of two days (28-29 Nov.) the relevant teams presented to the four external reviewers the results of the previous four years: technical infrastructure installed, services and operations created, and the extensive library of earth observation data now available in terrabyte. Scientists from seven DLR institutes gave an impression the practical benefits of terrabyte for their research.

The reviewers analysed the implementation, availability and innovative potential of the large project. In their statement at the conclusion of the event they recognize the value of the successful development by the two project partners of the terrabyte infrastructure, the fruitful applications and outstanding teamwork, and they gave valuable recommendations for future enhancement.
