Because the DEMMIN site is very heterogeneous, both spatial and temporal changes occur on relatively large fields (over 100 ha), which makes in-field management necessary.

There are many in-situ measurements available for the DEMMIN test site, both for specific locations and large areas, gathered in the course of the precision farming activities of the Demmin interest group. These data are processed digitally and entered into an agricultural geographic information system (GIS), which makes it possible to limit the analysis of remote sensing data to particular fields or to derive information for specific plots.

The large field size is a particular advantage when using remote sensing data, since statistically meaningful analyses can be undertaken at various geometric resolutions (see Fig. 1). The available in-situ data include parameters which have been collected both manually (such as ground soundings and crop ratings) and mechanically (like yield or nitrogen measurements). Figure 2 shows some of the data sets.
