MoCKiii – visualised transport use for the city of Cologne

In the MoCKiii project, a dashboard is being set up that will enable the city of Cologne to relatively easily detect not only the current traffic situation, but also changes in mobility behaviour and the traffic situation, so that suitable countermeasures can then be initiated.

The task of the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems in the project is to set up a daily monitoring of the modal split (share of use of different modes of transport) in Cologne and to deliver the results to the dashboard. For this purpose, the researchers can build on a unique data basis, which will be gradually improved over the remaining term of the project. Particularly noteworthy are the movements of people between different parts of the city, which are based on mobile phone data provided by Telekom, as well as data from cycle counting stations from the provider Eco Counter. In addition, there is data from several thousand detectors in the city, which contain counting loop data from cars and bicycles, as well as the requirements of pedestrian buttons at traffic lights and bus/train crossings at local public transport reporting points. As soon as available, further data from newly installed detectors/sensors will be included in the calculation.

Number of trips per day in Cologne from 1 January 2023 to 31 January 2023, divided into the four modes of transport motorised private transport, public transport, cycling and walking.
Number of trips in Cologne per hour spread over a week (weekly hydrographs). All 52 weeks of the year 2022 are shown, with the weekly hydrographs during the winter, Easter, summer and autumn holidays highlighted in colour, each showing clearly different patterns. The data is based on Telekom data.
