Focus on Low-Cost Airlines in Germany

Twice a year, the Low Cost Monitor of the DLR Institute of Air Transport is published, showcasing the current developments of low-cost airlines operating in Germany. Since 2006, the Low-Cost Airline Report has provided information on key features of low-cost air traffic and current developments in this market segment, particularly on the number and relative significance of low-cost carriers, their offerings including flight prices, and passenger demand for low-cost services.

The report is important because changes in this segment also have immediate effects on the entire air transport system in Germany. This affects not only airports and airlines themselves but also extends to a variety of stakeholders, including the regional economy and individual travelers.

Low Cost Monitor 2/2024

The issue analyses the low-cost offer in summer 2024 and the corresponding price development in autumn 2024. While the European market in the comparison period is above the 2019 values with two percent growth, the German market still does not reach the pre-corona level.

Low Cost Monitor 1/2024

The report shows the development in winter and spring 2024. While the total number of flights offered in one week in the 2024 winter flight schedule in Germany increased by around five per cent compared to the previous year, the number of flights offered by airlines operating in the low-cost market only grew by three per cent.

The report for spring and summer 2023 shows further relaxation of the market compared to the pandemic years. However, the level of 2019 has not yet been reached.

Low Cost Monitor 1/2023

Low-cost flight connections from Germany continued to experience slow growth during the winter season of 2022/2023. However, pre-crisis levels are still far from being reached. At the same time, budget airlines are no longer as cheap. Low-cost carriers are withdrawing from major airports, and long-haul offers to overseas destinations are only slowly re-entering the market.
