Site selection factors
DLR chose a location on Schmidt Península for several reasons.
GARS O’Higgins is located on Cape Legoupil, some 30 km southwest of the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula on Isabel Riquelme Islet, also known as Schmidt Península. The island is ca. 150 m wide and 200 m long, features rocky as well as pebbled areas, and is only a few metres from the Antarctic mainland. At ebb tide there is a land link to the continent. GARS O’Higgins is in the immediate vicinity of the Chilean Base General Bernardo O’Higgins, which is operated by Antarctic Department of Chile’s army. Chile has erected a suspension bridge between the island and the continent as well as a docking breakwater.
