RS4AIM-2

Against the background of an uncertain and unprofitable food situation the expansion of efficient and sustainable agriculture in Ethiopia is especially important. In the RS4AIM-2 project (Remote Sensing for large-scale Agricultural Investment Monitoring in Ethiopia 2) DFD continues the cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), a service provider assisting the German government in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development, on the monitoring of land use in Ethiopia.

DFD develops methods to monitor land use and classify field crops in Ethiopia based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite data time-series and generates the corresponding information products. The findings of the RS4AIM-2 project are intended to support the monitoring of current land use and the implementation of better land management approaches.

In the RS4AIM project the DFD Department of Land Surface Dynamics generates up-to-date information products on land use and exploitation of areas suitable for agriculture. Based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time-series methods for classification of crop types are developed for the study areas characterized by extensive cloud coverage during the growing season.
