Eco-Aral
Use of remote sensing and geographic information systems for ecologically oriented planning processes in public and private sectors in the Aral Sea region
The drying of the Aral Sea is one of the most well-known environmental disasters with dramatic health, ecological and economic consequences. The GIZ project "Ecologically oriented regional development in the Aral Sea region" addresses competence-strengthening measures to enable investment decisions under consideration of environmental sustainability and climate adaptation. Application of state-of-the-art remote sensing data and analyzes are intended to support the agricultural, forestry and water management sectors and provide new possibilities of ecologically oriented regional planning. Additionally, the project aims to improve cross-border cooperation in the Aral Sea region.
Besides leading the Earth observation based work package, the DLR-DFD will conduct different Sentinel-2 based mapping efforts to monitor and document recent state of Aral Sea region.
