Visit from the BKG leadership

On February 6, 2024 EOC welcomed a delegation comprised of the president of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), Prof. Paul Becker, and his senior staff.
In a meeting of the leadership of both institutions central areas of collaboration relating to the use of remote sensing data for public authorities were discussed and potentials in additional fields examined.

In particular, new possibilities and requirements for managing large inventories of remote sensing data and their AI-facilitated evaluation for a variety of applications ranging from environmental and climate protection to questions of public safety and disaster control were explored. At the same time, the continuation of joint collaboration via the framework agreement between DLR and the Federal Ministry of the Interior (IF-Bund) was discussed.

The program also included a visit to DLR’s helicopter-borne 4K-camera system that was successfully employed to obtain data relating to the catastrophic floods in the Ahr Valley. “The many years of close cooperation with BKG is particularly meaningful for DFD as it also facilitates the effective future transfer of remote sensing data to Federal public authorities”, said Prof. Stefan Dech, director of the German Remote Sensing Data Center during the visit. Prof. Paul Becker added, “The effective use of earth observation information for federal authorities in Germany will be further strengthened by BKG’s fruitful cooperation with DLR”.

The next meeting between BKG and DLR-EOC was envisaged for 2025 at BKG in Frankfurt.
