Prof. Hannes Taubenböck wins science slam
The first-place winner at the Science Short Lecture competition held on November 8, 2024, in Würzburg was Prof. Hannes Taubenböck, representing DLR and the Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) at Würzburg University.
In his brief lecture entitled "I see something you don't see ….", Hannes Taubenböck presented to a full-house audience of 800 people his team's research field at EORC and DLR, namely, urban remote sensing. He showed that sometimes one's perspective must change in order to understand the world in a new or different way. And that is precisely what satellite remote sensing offers. He demonstrated how surprisingly people can sometimes form Earth's surface, what ideas are followed up to accomplish this, and how the resulting insights can help us to more sensibly organize the limited space on our planet. He not only pulled his own leg but also held up a mirror to his audience.
At the Science Slam, professors, doctoral candidates, and scientists from JMU and THWS have for several years competed for the favor of the audience. Anything goes at the Science Short Lecture competition on the way to obtaining the loudest public applause.
