Free-of-charge access to atmospherically corrected Sentinel-2 data for Germany
DLR's Earth Observation Center offers users free-of-charge access to atmospherically corrected Sentinel-2 data with spatial coverage of Germany (time span: the past 12 months). The multispectral data indicate light reflectance from Earth's surface ("Bottom of Atmosphere" Reflectance, Level-2A data product), making it possible to characterise ground cover. The data are generated with the help of the MAJA processor, which corrects atmospheric effects using Sentinel-2 image stacks. Considering the time axis as an additional dimension makes possible robust detection of clouds and flexible determination of aerosol parameters, among other subjects of interest. MAJA was developed in cooperation with the French space organisation CNES (Centre National d’Ètudes Spatiales). This meant that methodological approaches could be combined to pool the strengths of the cooperating partners. The Sentinel-2 MAJA data generated at the Remote Sensing Technology Institute are stored at the German Satellite Data Archive (D-SDA) and made available for downloading via the EOC Geoservice.
"The chief reason for making these data available is to enable testing of the MAJA-products and comparison with approved Level-2A ESA data products", explains Dr. Stefan Auer, who coordinates work on MAJA at the Remote Sensing Technology Institute. "We hope that feedback and insights from users will give us ideas for future applications for MAJA as well as suggestions for improving the data product in the context of continued cooperation with CNES", he added.
