On February 3, 2012 Klaus-Peter Willsch, a member of the German parliament, visited the German Aerospace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen. At DLR’s Earth Observation Center (EOC), the chairman of the parliament’s Aeronautics and Space group was informed about the work of the Center for Satellite Based Crisis Information (ZKI).

The EOC spokesman and director of the German Remote Sensing Data Center, Prof. Stefan Dech, described the potential of crisis mapping based on earth observation data, using as examples national and international requests.

ZKI is a service of DLR’s German Remote Sensing Data Center. Its purpose is to provide a 24/7 service for the rapid procurement, processing and analysis of satellite data in cases of natural and environmental disasters, for humanitarian aid activities, and for civil security purposes worldwide. Its data products are customized to meet the specific requirements of national and international political decision makers, situation centers and aid organizations and are also made available to the public free of charge.
