Exhibition "Viewing Earth from Space": 75 years of research in Oberpfaffenhofen

The Oberpfaffenhofen research location is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The anniversary year was opened on January 24, 2012 with a vernissage at the Starnberg District Office. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Oberpfaffenhofen put together a gallery of more than 50 satellite images that provide an unusual view of the earth. The photo exhibition "Our Earth from Space" was organized together with the business development agency gfw Starnberg mbH.

"This is science and art at the same time. I am delighted that we are able to experience a by-product of DLR's exciting work with the images on display here," said District Administrator Karl Roth at the opening ceremony. The exhibits are actually based on digital measurement data - and are therefore not photographs. The satellites' sensors not only record the visible range, but also the range of the electromagnetic spectrum that is not visible to humans. Their data provides information on the vitality of plants, the growth of cities, altitude profiles, ocean currents, glacier movements and much more. This provides scientists with a continuous, comprehensive and accurate picture of the health of the planet. Global change, caused by the profound influence of humans, becomes clear time and again.

"With our data from sound earth observation and the latest technologies, we want to create a basis for the right decisions to be made - for the protection of the earth and people," explains Prof. Dr. Dech, Director of the German Remote Sensing Data Center at DLR. Christoph Winkelkötter, Managing Director of gfw, states: "The images on display show the beauty, but also the vulnerability of the Earth in a truly impressive way.

The exhibition can be viewed in the foyer of the Starnberg District Office until February 10, 2012.
