Test Position M11.4

Gel as an alternative propellant
While certain propellant gels exhibit similar spraying behavior to liquid propellants over a wide range, others can show completely different spraying patterns.

Area of application

Research and development tests for motors and propulsion systems under atmospheric conditions with high supply pressures

Test object

  • Optical combustion chambers
  • Energetic fuels
  • Non-Newtonian fluids
  • Investigation of spray, ignition and combustion behavior of propulsion systems and propellants
  • Performance analysis for rocket engines and orbital TCA/combustion chambers
  • Investigation of propellants
  • Component tests (valves, heaters, electrolyzers,...)
  • Hydraulically assisted feed system with mass flow control

Satellite and rocket propellants of various compositions are tested at the M11.4 test position. The focus of the research is on the optical investigation of combustion processes, the miniaturization of combustion chambers, the analysis of additives and the evaluation of general ignition and combustion properties. Non-Newtonian propellants are also tested at M11.4; these can offer advantages over solid or liquid propellants.
