Fact Sheet Research and Technology Test Facility P8

The P8 research and technoloy test facility was built in 1995 for testing subscale hydrogen / oxygen rocket combustors with two test cells.

Fact Sheet Innovation Test Facility P3

In June 1964, work began on the second stage of expansion of the test site, with the construction of the P3 test facility for testing ELDO engines. The P3 and P4 test facility complexes were built in Lampoldshausen between 1964 and 1966 and represent the most modern altitude test stands, which are still regularly maintained today.

Fact Sheet Upper Stage Test Facility P5.2

The highly complex and extremely powerful P5.2 upper stage test stand was developed and built as part of the development of the future European Ariane 6 launcher under a direct contract from the European Space Agency ESA. It completes the DLR site‘s research and test portfolio.

Fact Sheet H2ORIZON

The H ORIZON project deals with the generation of hydrogen from local 2 wind energy. The gas is used to provide heat and electricity, and as fuel for rocket engine test stands. It is also supplied for hydrogen mobility and industrial applications. This project demonstrates the coupling of the space, energy and transport sectors at a megawatt scale.

Fact Sheet Technical Center M3

The Technical Center M3 consists of three test positions (M3.1, M3.3, M3.5) for tests with cryogenic media such as liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and gaseous fuels, such as gaseous hydrogen and hydrocarbons, at system pressures of up to 40 bar.

Fact Sheet Test Complex M11

Research and technology development work in the field of novel propellants for rocket and ramjet engines is carried out at the M11 test stand complex and in the associated physical-chemical laboratory at M3. The test bench complex consists of four test positions (M11.1, M11.2, M11.3, M11.4) and the test field M11.5.

Fact Sheet Test Bench P1.0

In order to develop, test and qualify propulsion systems for satellites, upper stages and space probes for their later use, it is necessary to create appropriate test conditions. At the P1.0 this was realised by setting up a vacuum test stand. Here it is possible to test the test specimens under atmospheric conditions with a few millibars of ambient pressure.

Fact Sheet Test Bench P4

The P4 test facility was built between 1963 and 1966 and has been modified and extended several times since then. The attached altitude simulation facility enables the entire flight phase of an upper stage engine to be tested under space conditions. The P4 test facility is unique in Europe and also a milestone worldwide for engine testing in a vacuum.

Fact Sheet Test Bench P5

The P5 test stand is one of the two largest test facilities for cryogenic rocket propulsion in Europe. It was built as part of the ESA Ariane 5 development programme and was commissioned in 1990.
