Lidar measurements for Germany’s first offshore wind park

Scientists of the Lidar department of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics are currently performing lidar measurements at the Multibrid M5000 wind turbine in Bremerhaven.

It is the prototype for the first German offshore wind farm “alpha ventus” which is built 45 km off the North Sea island Borkum. With a rated power of 5 MW and a hub height of about 100 m this wind turbine is among the most powerful and largest available ones.

The lidar measurements of DLR allow to achieve information about the mutual interference of single wind turbines in a park to broaden the understanding of the flow field around wind power generators.

In addition, the suitability of a commercial lidar device will be tested. This device was manufactured by Leosphere, was then modified and is now operated by the endowed chair on wind energy (SWE) of the University of Stuttgart. It is mounted on the nacelle of the wind turbine and will be used to optimize the operation of the offshore wind park in the future.
