European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts

ECMWF is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. We are both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing global numerical weather predictions and other data for our Member and Co-operating States and the broader community. The Centre has one of the largest supercomputer facilities and meteorological data archives in the world. Other strategic activities include delivering advanced training and assisting the WMO in implementing its programmes.

EUMETSAT

EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. EUMETSAT is an intergovernmental organisation based in Darmstadt, Germany, with 30 member states. EUMETSAT operates the geostationary satellites Meteosat-10, and -11 over Europe and Africa, and Meteosat-9 over the Indian Ocean. The data and products from EUMETSAT's satellites are vital to weather forecasting and make a significant contribution to the monitoring of the environment and climate change.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) was born through the merger of three institutions, namely the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL) and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). It was designated as a core performance agency to support the Japanese government's overall aerospace development and utilization. JAXA, therefore, can conduct integrated operations from basic research and development to utilization.

KNMI is also the national research and information centre for meteorology, climate, air quality, and seismology.

Laboratoire Atmosphères, Observations Spatiales

Das Laboratoire Atmosphères, Observations Spatiales ist eine gemischte Forschungseinheit, die sich auf das Studium der physikalisch-chemischen Prozesse spezialisiert hat, die die Erd- und Planetenatmosphäre und ihre Grenzflächen mit der Oberfläche, dem Ozean und dem interplanetaren Medium steuern. Das Labor hat eine starke instrumentelle Kompetenz entwickelt und baut innovative Instrumente, die vom Boden aus eingesetzt werden und manchmal in die Umlaufbahn gebracht werden oder zu anderen Körpern des Sonnensystems fliegen. Numerische Modelle der Atmosphäre werden ebenfalls entwickelt und zur Interpretation der verschiedenen Beobachtungen verwendet.

Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique

The Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) was created in 1968 on the initiative of Pierre Morel. The LMD became a joint research unit in 1998. The laboratory is a member of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL), a federation of nine public research laboratories in environmental sciences in Ile-de-France. The LMD plays a leading role in several projects and centres, around climate modelling, the SIRTA observation site at the École Polytechnique, planetology, or servers and databases.

Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Rostock

The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Rostock (IAP) conducts research in physics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere in close collaboration with national and international partners. Besides studying specific processes in this region, our research also connects to climate change and to the role of atmospheric forcing on space weather.

Max Planck Institute for Chemistry

Current research at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz aims at an integral understanding of chemical processes in the Earth system, particularly in the atmosphere and biosphere. Our scientists explore the interactions of the climate, ocean, and atmospheric systems from geologic to annual time scales. Investigations address a wide range of interactions between air, water, soil, life and climate in the course of Earth history up to today´s human-driven epoch, the anthropocene.

Max Planck Institute for Meteorology

We are interested in the processes that establish Earth’s climate and that cause it to change. Our interests gain impetus from the fact that human activity is amplifying the atmosphere’s greenhouse effect. That this will cause the surface to warm is well documented and not disputed. Much less clear, and hence more interesting, is exactly how much warming will arise from a given increase in greenhouse gases.

Our research is dedicated to the study of global biogeochemical cycles describing the interactions between the biosphere, the atmosphere, the geosphere and the entire climate system. We aim to better understand how living organisms - including humans - exchange basic resources such as water, carbon, nutrients, and energy with their environment and how this affects ecosystems and climate at regional to global scales.

NCAR was established by the National Science Foundation in 1960 to provide the university community with world-class facilities and services that were beyond the reach of any individual institution. More than a half-century later, we are still delivering on that mission. NCAR provides the atmospheric and related Earth system science community with state-of-the-art resources, including supercomputers, research aircraft, sophisticated computer models, and extensive data sets.
