CFD Tools
For the design of cryogenic tank systems of upper stages, the prediction and thus the predictability of the propellant behavior in the tank systems over the entire mission duration are of essential importance. For example, effects such as stratification, evaporation, condensation, boiling, two-phase flow, fuel sloshing per se and coupled with heat and mass transfer phenomena, as well as processes such as filling, emptying or pressurization must be considered.
The Transportation and Propulsion Systems department uses commercial CFD tools such as FLOW-3D to calculate flow phenomena and develops its own solvers for special problems using the open source code OpenFOAM.
