Safety systems and human-machine interfaces oriented to diverse population towards future scenarios with increasing share of highly automated vehicles

AWARE2ALL

AWARE2ALL is a research and innovation project funded within the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The project is aimed at improving the safety of connected and highly automated vehicles for both vehicle occupants and all other individuals involved in traffic outside the vehicle.

AWARE2ALL Logo

With the emergence of highly automated vehicles in mixed traffic, both traffic safety and the interactions between different road users will undergo significant changes. AWARE2ALL is developing integrated and innovative safety systems (passive and active systems) as well as internal and external human-machine interfaces, that are connected through a comprehensive understanding of the traffic situation. The goal is to ensure the safety of highly automated vehicles in mixed traffic for all road users.

A particular focus of the project is on underrepresented groups, such as women, older adults, people with sensory or physical impairments, cultural minorities, and those with limited digital skills, to ensure that the outcomes provide safety for all road users.

AWARE2ALL population and vehicles

In Aware2All, the Institute is leading the Task "Passive Safety System", which focuses on designing safety systems for highly autonomous vehicles, including interior components such as seats and cladding, as well as structural elements of the body-in-white. The vehicle structures and interior components of highly automated cars raise distinctive new safety challenges. The goal is to develop and analyse passive safety features, such as airbags and seating structures, to protect a greater variety of adult occupants, regardless of size, age, seating posture, or orientation. This is accomplished by designing new passive safety concepts and adaptive safety systems that respond dynamically to real-time crash situations and conditions within the vehicle.

Additionally, DLR-FK is leading Aware2All’s DEMO 1, where new safety technologies and systems are being developed, integrated and tested. To support this, DLR’s Urban Modular Vehicle PeopleMover (UMV PM) – an autonomous concept car developed by DLR – will serve as a platform for integrating, testing, and showcasing these innovations.
