One in four disasters worldwide occur in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 15 of the 60 most affected countries in the world are threatened by two or more climate disasters.

As part of the Digital Alliance EULAC, a regional Copernicus Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean (CopernicusLAC) will be established in Panama. The centre will provide EO practitioners and users from across the region with a greatly enhanced capability to develop new EO-based services related to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and improved Disaster Risk Management (DRM). To boost the adoption of EO-based services, the consortium is developing 14 EO services that represent the state of the art in EO technologies for DRR and DRM needs.

The transfer of DFD data and knowledge helps to promote the use of Copernicus data providing EO services to engage regional and national actors in the LAC region. In addition, a national incubation centre for the development of downstream commercial services is supported in Panama.
