SCIAMACHY Book Receives Award
In March 2002 the atmospheric science instrument SCIAMACHY (SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY) was launched into low earth orbit on board ESA’s ENVISAT satellite. It continues to be one of the major earth observation undertakings of Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium, and is being accomplished in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA). Since the SCIAMACHY mission has meanwhile provided detailed insights into the earth’s atmosphere and global climate change, it was considered well worthwhile to arrange for a book describing all aspects of the SCIAMACHY mission. This publication appeared in January 2011 under the title “SCIAMACHY – Exploring the Changing Earth’s Atmosphere” in the Earth Sciences series of the Springer publishing house. It was edited by Manfred Gottwald from the Remote Sensing Technology Institute, German Aerospace Center, and Heinrich Bovensmann from the Institute of Environmental Physics – Institute of Remote Sensing, University of Bremen, with 60 scientists and engineers contributing to individual chapters.
Atmospheric Science Librarians International (ASLI), an international professional association of atmospheric science librarians, institutions, and organizations involved in atmospheric research, has selected SCIAMACHY – Exploring the Changing Earth’s Atmosphere as the ‘2011 ASLI Choice’ in the fields of meteorology, climatology and atmospheric sciences owing to its ‘comprehensive summary of the milestone SCIAMACHY mission from its initial conception to most recent results’ (see link). The award was presented by ASLI at the New Orleans annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in January 2012.
