Team: Optical System Calibration

The group is responsible for calibrating optical spectrometer systems at the Earth Observation Center (EOC). Calibration of the institute's own imaging and non-imaging spectrometers including the associated software system correction is as much a part of the group's concern as is providing support services and advice to external partners. The range of instruments dealt with extends from compact field and UAV equipment to aerial and satellite-borne sensors.

Well-equipped optical labs are available for experimental work, like the ISO 9001 certified calibration lab (Calibration Home Base, CHB). Large, heavy, hyperspectral sensors can be precisely characterized there, radiometrically, geometrically and spectrally, from near UV to shortwave infrared. The institute’s own HySpex aircraft sensors, used throughout Europe as part of the OpAiRS user service to obtain hyperspectral remote sensing data, are calibrated there as well. The CHB is accessible for use by designated partners.

In addition to optical measurement technology the group also has expertise in data processing. Complex and extensive data sets can be analysed to generate calibration tables using software developed in-house. The results then flow into processing environments for systems correction.
