ZLP Augsburg

At the ZLP site in Augsburg, which is also the Automation and Quality Assurance Department in Production Technology at the Institute of Construction and Structural Technology, science and industry are working together to develop new processes to make it easier for innovations to find their way into industrial implementation.

In order to meet the specific requirements of the aerospace industry, DLR scientists are developing automated production processes for CFRP aerospace structures in an integrated process chain. The centrepiece is a research platform that is unique in Europe: the "MFZ system". This and other innovative systems at ZLP Augsburg integrate new robot-based production and quality assurance technologies for lightweight structures on a full-scale. Industrial companies can work on the systems and utilise DLR's expertise in joint projects. This creates an efficient innovation network in the long term.

The ZLP Augsburg is divided into five research groups.

The Flexible Automation Systems group's focus on making processes and systems more flexible addresses current challenges in the field of automation for aerospace applications.

Research group Assembly and oining Technologies

How can aerospace components be assembled automatically? The Assembly and Joining Technologies group develops automated solutions for this.

Research group Production Integrated Quality Assurance

The focus of the DLR Centre for Lightweight Production Technology in Augsburg on the real-time recording of plant data during production in combination with specialised sensor systems for quality parameters that are adapted to the process means that production can be continuously monitored and readjusted in good time before rejects even occur.

Research group Processes and Automation

In the aerospace industry, new automation approaches are needed to reduce investments and increase component quality at the same time due to the comparatively low production rates and high number of variants.

Research group Technical Centre for Production Processes

The Augsburg site has a comprehensive range of machinery and qualified skilled workers. In-house production is the cornerstone of lasting, high quality.
