Solutions for Mobility Planning in Suburban and Rural Areas

Evaluations of Developed Solution Approaches
During the workshop, the applicability and relevance of the developed concepts and processes were discussed. In addition to validation by planning practice, starting points for new research and foundations for further collaboration were gained.
  • Particularly networking with municipalities and districts offers potential.
  • On-demand transport can facilitate connections to urban public transport.
  • Focus: transport, intermodality, knowledge exchange.

Mobility Planning in Suburban and Rural Areas

An exciting workshop on mobility planning in suburban and rural areas took place at the DLR Institute of Transport Research. Key outcomes from the projects "Connected Mobility for Livable Places," "Sustainability of Mobility," and the short study "Mobility in Rural Areas" were discussed.

The aim of the workshop was to discuss the opportunities and challenges of municipal mobility planning with stakeholders from communities and districts surrounding Berlin. The focus was on how research can support municipal levers and planning processes.

When spatial, planning, and neighbourhood perspectives meet

Mobility in Berlin's surrounding areas is caught between urban and rural dynamics. Commuters need connections to the well-developed public transport of the city, while rural areas are predominantly car-dependent. Here, on-demand services offer significant potential. At the same time, many residents expressed a desire for better cycling infrastructure, especially outside city areas.

It became clear that transforming rural mobility poses significant challenges. The need to anchor sustainable mobility at all political levels was highlighted. Moreover, it was evident that many municipalities are reaching the limits of their capacity and responsibility and depend on support from higher levels and funding.

A big thank you to all participants for their valuable contributions! The collaboration holds significant potential for future research initiatives and increased cooperation to further promote sustainable mobility development.

The results from the VMo4Orte project will be published soon. The results will then be available for reading here:
