Heliokon GmbH was founded in April 2016 as a spin-off company of the DLR Institute of Solar Research by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Hoffschmidt together with Patrick Hilger. In September 2021, Heliokon merged with the Swiss company Synhelion and changed its name to Synhelion Germany. Synhelion Germany GmbH continues the successful work of Heliokon: The company develops and produces innovative system solutions for the heliostat field of solar thermal plants.
Synhelion is a global pioneer in the field of sustainable solar fuels. The clean energy company emerged in 2016 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) to decarbonize transportation. Solar fuels can replace all types of fossil fuels because they are economically viable and fully compatible with existing global infrastructure. Synhelion's unique technology converts concentrated solar heat into the hottest process heat available on the market, enabling an unprecedented number of industrial processes such as fuel production and cement manufacturing to be powered by solar heat. The company is already working with international partners such as Lufthansa Group, Wood, Eni, CEMEX and Zurich Airport.
