OTTER at ILA 2024: RSC³ demonstrates Responsive Space in practice

  • RSC³ presented the OTTER exhibit at the DLR booth at ILA 2024.
  • OTTER illustrates the cooperation between RSC³ and industry partners in the context of Responsive Space
  • OTTER makes Responsive Space tangible for visitors as a real-world example.

The Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC³) presented the 3U CubeSat OTTER at the DLR booth during ILA 2024, engaging trade show attendees with information on Responsive Space. OTTER (Optical Traffic Tracking Experiment for Responsive Space) is a small satellite developed by German Orbital Systems, supported by RSC³ to capture collaboration with industry partners in an accelerated satellite construction process. Within the Responsive Space themeensuring critical space infrastructure protection through rapid deployment of small satellites or reconfiguration of existing systems-OTTER effectively demonstrated practical applications and benefits.

Displayed at a 1:1 scale, the mock-up provided detailed insights into the systems of the satellite, constructed in just six months. Equipped with an optical camera and an AIS antenna for ship position determination, OTTER aims to enhance maritime situational awareness by capturing ship position data and verifying it with the optical camera.

Stage attendants and RSC³ staff highlighted their involvement in analyzing the small satellite's development process, thereby advancing research and technology base in Responsive Space. Visitors at the DLR booth gained a clear understanding of the Responsive Space concept through practical examples like OTTER.

ILA Berlin is one of the world's most significant aerospace exhibitions, held biennially in Brandenburg since 1912. This year's event attracted nearly 100,000 visitors who explored exhibits and booths from approximately 600 exhibitors representing 31 nations.
