The living and simulation area in the :envihab is a highly complex and completely unique research facility. It offers the optimal conditions for researching various aspects of aerospace medicine with up to 12 participants in individual rooms.
The living and simulation area of the high-tech medical research facility :envihab of DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Cologne is a highly complex and completely unique residential research facility. It offers the optimal conditions for researching various aspects of aerospace medicine with up to 12 participants in individual rooms.
Aross a total area of 364 square metres, this large-scale research facility can be used to research aspects of human physiology over long periods of time under strictly controlled environmental conditions. Factors such as ambient light, temperature, atmosphere etc. can be varied to suit the requirements of the study.
Sleeping and living spaces for participants in medical studies
Module 3 serves as a living and simulation facility for residential studies that investigate the effects of various environmental conditions on the health and performance of the participants. The module is suitable for conducting bed-rest and clinical studies, as well as investigating reactions to a lack of oxygen or the effect of ambient light, as well as for isolation studies. The close proximity of the module to the other research areas at :envihab, such as the PET-MRI, the Short-Arm Human Centrifuge, the Astrobiology laboratory, the Hypobaric Chamber and the Physiology Lab, opens up a diverse range of research options.
The variety of study possibilities in :envihab expands our knowledge of human physiology under various, sometimes extreme environmental conditions. Negative effects, for example on bone metabolism or the cardiovascular system, can be improved by researching appropriate countermeasures. New insights into the influence of different factors on sleep and performance will also be gained. Ultimately, this (bio)medical research contributes to improving the health of people in the mobile society, and is therefore not limited only to the field of aerospace medicine, but also relates to the health of people on Earth.
