Transport research at DLR

How will we travel from A to B in the future? Is a world without accidents, traffic jams delays and diversions possible? How can our mobility become compatible with the environment? And what must the transport system of the future look like to ensure it provides for a prospering industry? DLR's vision is to provide solutions to meet the demands of an increasingly mobile society: Accidents, traffic jams, delays, diversions and environmental pollution should be avoided. In doing so, DLR helps shape trends, explores topics in greater depth and expands its portfolio for a greener, smarter, more user-friendly and more economical future transport. With its Transport programme, DLR is the largest institutionally funded transport research facility in Europe.

Strategy and programme

At the heart of DLR’s transport research is the transformation of mobility. This transformation aims to address the various challenges related to emissions and transport safety, while ensuring that mobility continues to meet the needs of Germany as a business hub and society as a whole.

Research infrastructure

DLR's facility portfolio comprises over 150 large-scale research facilities at its sites across Germany and as far away as the polar regions. DLR also makes its large-scale facilities available to partners from industry and academia as part of collaborative research projects.

Hy­dro­gen – the en­er­gy source of the fu­ture

An economy without greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – this is Europe’s declared, 30-year goal for halting climate change. Renewable energies are expected to replace fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas. Hydrogen will play an important role in the sustainable transformation of the energy supply system.

The future of rail transport

Under its flagship 'Next-Generation Train (NGT)' concept, DLR is developing a vision of future rail transport as an essential part of mobility geared towards sustainability and greater capacity. New technologies from the fields of propulsion systems, aerodynamics, lightweight construction, chassis design, crash behaviour, air conditioning, automation, control and regulation all feed into the NGT concept.

Projects and missions

Galileo

The aim of the civil Galileo system is to make Europe independent of the military-controlled navigation services of the USA (GPS) and Russia (GLONASS) and to provide navigation signals with unprecedented accuracy.

DLR transport research projects

Transport research at the DLR is carried out in theme-centred projects: the relevant DLR institutes research concrete solutions in an interdisciplinary way. All projects benefit from being pooled in the DLR together with its other programs Aeronautics, Space and Energy, as well as networking with politics, the economy and science.
