Center for Satellite based Crisis Information (ZKI)
DLR's Center for Satellite Based Crisis Information (ZKI) at the Earth Observation Center (EOC) acquires and analyses Earth observation data including satellite and aerial images and other geodata and uses it to generate up-to-date situation information before, during and after disasters and crisis situations as well as in the event of large-scale planned events. The focus here is on the research and application of new sensors, innovative analysis methods and the further development of remote sensing products and services. The large-scale research facility provides the necessary infrastructural equipment and support, from servers and storage space to software and a situation room serving as the operational and representative hub.
Crisis-related information is generated using the latest sensors and research methods and in consultation with end users from the field. The ZKI is a unique interface between remote sensing research and application. It bridges the 'last mile gap' through knowledge and technology transfer. The close integration between research, development and operational services is proving to be a great asset.
The ZKI is involved in national and international cooperative ventures with various partners from research and industry and is closely networked with governmental partners and non-governmental organisations. This ensures a continuous and fruitful dialogue between research and end users: for research as a source of ideas and for end users for product and service development.
